Magnetic properties of gaseous oxygen

An oxygen bubble can be attracted by the magnetic field of a strong magnet.

Materials
Petrie dish, strong magnet (samarium–cobalt or neodymium), screw driver, syringe.

Chemicals
10 mL syringe with oxygen, 20 mL soap solution.

Procedure

  • Place soap solution in a Petrie dish;
  • Using syringe, make a bubble with oxygen;
  • Use strong magnet attached on screw driver to attract the bubble (Fig. 1). Try from different sides.Â
